An Occupational Therapist works with children and their families to help them build up the skills necessary to become functional and independent adults. As a child your primary occupation is to play and through play to learn, develop and mature. An occupational therapists assesses all aspects of your child’s daily life: This includes self care; school based tasks; and hand skills; in addition to less obvious tasks like being able to interpret the information you get from touch; the ability to sense the position, location and orientation of the body; and coordinating what you see with an appropriate motor response. Occupational therapy focuses on maximising the ability of the child to enhance their potential to participate at home, in social settings and in pre-school / school environments. The expectations for the level of development of any of these skills will vary depending on the child's age. Occupational Therapy facilitates the development of skills for the job of living. |
